Southwest Interventional Pain Specialists, SWIPS, is a specialty clinic that focuses on the use of medications, injections and other interventional procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of pain-related conditions.

Your care at SWIPS is managed by Dr. Rice and Mr. Pacheco, specialists with over 30 years combined experience.

Meet our Staff

JAMES H. RICE, MD, ANESTHESIOLOGIST

Dr. Rice, a board-certified physician, completed his undergraduate education in Physiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio in 1986, then completed his fellowship in Pain Management at the Pain Control Center, Presbyterian University Hospital, in Pittsburgh. Dr. Rice's extensive medical career began at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque where he later became the medical director for the Center for Pain Management. Dr. Rice is currently the owner and medical director of Southwest Interventional Pain Specialists in Albuquerque where he has been practicing pain management since 2003. He is also an experienced independent medical examiner for workers' compensation cases and has received additional training in the performance of impairment ratings.

P. DAVID PACHECO, R.PH., PH.C., PA-C, CAAAPM

Mr. Pacheco graduated from UNM’s College of Pharmacy in 1995 and is a licensed pharmacist and pharmacist clinician with the state of New Mexico. Upon graduation from PA school in 2000, Mr. Pacheco entered the VA system where he spent 8 years in a dedicated pain clinic. Even after his promotion to formulary manager with the VA, he continued to work in pain management under the tutelage of an addiction specialist. He has also taught medical and pharmacy students as a preceptor since 2004 and has lectured at state and national conferences. With Southwest Interventional Pain Specialists, Mr. Pacheco continues his focus on pain management, specifically medication management, for chronic pain patients.
